Northern Circuit Route on
Mount Kilimanjaro
The Northern Circuit Route is widely regarded as one of the best ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This 9-day expedition combines outstanding acclimatization, remote wilderness, panoramic views around nearly the entire mountain, and one of the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro. If you're looking for a quieter, safer, and more rewarding trekking experience, the Northern Circuit is an exceptional choice.
Northern Circuit Route Overview
The standard 9-day itinerary is highly recommended, offering climbers the absolute best chance of success.
No steep scrambles (like the Barranco Wall). The gradual daily incline makes it less physically grueling.
Longer itineraries allow more time for gradual ascent. Summit outcomes depend on acclimatization, individual health, weather and guide decisions; reaching the summit is never guaranteed.
Begins in the dense forests of the western slopes, then traverses around the northern side of Kibo.
Best For: Climbers who want to maximize their summit chances, escape crowds, and witness pristine vistas.

9-Day Northern Circuit Itinerary
Daily Description
Our expedition begins with a pleasant morning drive to the western Londorossi Gate. After standard national park security checks, we drive through local potato plantations to the starting point. Climbing slowly along deep dirt footpaths, we enter Kilimanjaro's rich rainforest belt where high damp mosses, unique wild vines, and massive camphor trees dominate. We spend our first full night at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.
Scenic cross-Tanzania drive, high-canopy pine paths, spotting colobus monkeys.
Very slow 'Pole Pole' walking pace allows initial blood oxygen calibration.
Daily Description
Our path climbs steadily out of the thick trees into the scenic heather and moorland. We cross small streams, ascending a rocky ridge before walking onto the majestic western edge of the high Shira Plateau. The landscape broadens dynamically, revealing expansive vistas of the plateau and the distant summit cone of Kibo.
Leaving the dense forest edge, crossing volcanic hills, standing on the rim of Shira Plateau.
Substantial elevation gain is balanced by a gentle slope profile.
Daily Description
A relaxed, panoramic walk across the plateau meadows. We make a detour to climb Shira Cathedral, an ancient volcanic buttress offering breathtaking views. Continuing across several dry ridges, we arrive at Shira Camp 2 where lunch is freshly prepared. The afternoon is kept completely open to explore local moorland crevices and capture the sunset over Mount Meru.
Traversing Shira Cathedral rock pinnacles, incredible volcanic plains, looking out at Mount Meru.
Spend the night at 3,850m, reinforcing physical endurance under mild altitude conditions.
Daily Description
We leave the main southern trails today. Instead of heading toward Lava Tower, we turn northeast, trekking up rocky desert paths to the secluded sanctuary of Moir Hut. This camp is set in a quiet, rocky volcanic caldera. After hot tea, we hike further up into the high Lent Hills (4,700m) for an essential acclimatization run before returning for dinner.
High climb under the Lava Tower flank, branching off to wild northern gorges, quiet volcanic basin.
Climb high to 4,700m at Lent Hills, sleep low at 4,200m—the ultimate altitude training tactic.
Daily Description
A moderately steep climb brings us out of the Moir basin. We trek across pristine volcanic desert stretches, wrapping around the northern side of Kibo Peak. The trail is completely uncrowded, offering silent mountain grandeur. We descend slightly to Pofu (Buffalo) Camp, positioned on a ridge with stunning panoramic views over the vast Kenyan plains.
Trekking past the pristine Lent Group hills, traversing deep volcanic valleys, viewing Amboseli National Park in Kenya.
Extended hours walking at high altitude helps red blood cells form efficiently.
Daily Description
The trail ascends and descends through valleys and dry ridges on the north slopes. This region remains completely untouched, allowing us to trek in deep silence. The scenery becomes more desert-like. We cross a final broad ridge before setting up at Third Cave. The air here is drier and warmer, offering a comfortable place to recharge.
Climbing through the remote Pofu valleys, dramatic rock formations, quiet camp with stunning stars.
Sleeping at 3,800m gives the body a restful night's sleep and helps muscles recover ahead of summit night.
Daily Description
A steady, steep climb brings us through the northern Saddle desert plains. Kibo's peak looms majestically on our right. We arrive at School Hut early in the afternoon. The rest of the day is dedicated to eating high-carb warm meals, organizing headlamps, insulating thermal water bottles, and resting early before our midnight climb.
Climbing the northern saddle, Kibo Peak rising ahead, preparing cold-weather summit gear.
Resting above 4,800m gives excellent acclimatization before trekking to the summit.
Daily Description
We begin our climb at midnight under a canopy of stars. Walking 'pole pole' up steep volcanic scree, we reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim at dawn to see an unforgettable sunrise. A final push along the snowy ridge brings us to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, we descend to Kibo Hut for warm soup, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Hiking by headlamp under brilliant stars, reaching Hans Meyer Cave, watching the sunrise at Uhuru Peak, rapid descent to lush forests.
Rapid descent from the high peak helps alleviate headaches and provides rich oxygen-level air.
Daily Description
Our last morning is a beautiful, easy walk down through lush cloudforest trails. The air is warm, thick, and fragrant. At Mweka Gate, we sign out of national park protocols, celebrate our successful climb with the crew, and receive our official certificates. A private vehicle then transfers us back to Arusha for well-deserved hot showers.
Joyful celebration singing with our porters, collecting gold-bordered climb certificates, transfer back to hotel.
Complete return to sea level where your body feels full of energy and oxygen.

Why Shira & Northern Traverses Achieve unmatched Success
The single biggest obstacle when climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is high-altitude sickness, not physical fitness. Shorter routes force climbers up too quickly, which can lead to altitude headaches and nausea.
By choosing the 9-Day Northern Circuit, your body climbs slowly and has plenty of time to adapt. Spending several days trekking between 3,800m and 4,300m before the final summit push allows your lungs and blood to acclimate naturally, resulting in a safe and successful climb.

What Makes the Northern Circuit Truly Unique?
The Northern Circuit isn't just another trail; it's a carefully mapped traverse designed by experienced high-altitude guides. Here are the features that set it apart.
The Only 360-Degree Circle
While most routes climb straight up and head back down the same path, the Northern Circuit loops around Kibo, allowing you to experience every side of the mountain's dramatic landscapes.
Optimal Rain Shadow Protection
Situated away from the wet Indian Ocean winds, Kibo's northern face sits in a rain shadow, making the Northern Circuit typically drier and less muddy than southern routes.
A Masterclass in High-Altitude Acclimatization
The route spends multiple days traversing between 3,900m and 4,400m before the summit run. This gradual pace is ideal for safety and comfort in high altitude.

Unmatched Mount Solitude
"The silence of the northern slopes at dusk is unforgettable. It feels like climbing a private mountain."
