From the Historic Selous to Nyerere's Crown
For more than half a century, this vast pristine region operated under the historic banner of the Selous Game Reserve—the oldest and largest protected wildlife reserve in Africa, first demarcated in 1922 and honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
In 2019, to further safeguard the ecology and solidify conservation efforts, the Tanzanian government formally transitioned the northern sector—spanning the pristine Rufiji River basin—into a national park. It was renamed Nyerere National Park in special honor of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the legendary founding father of independent Tanzania.
The Wild Soul of Southern Tanzania safaris
Tanzania's safari tourism is generally split into two distinct paths: the high-traffic Northern Circuit (comprising Serengeti and Ngorongoro) and the rugged, exclusive Southern Circuit.
Nyerere is the undisputed anchor of Southern Tanzania. Its isolation keeps vehicle numbers low and wilderness integrity high. By avoiding large tourist masses, Nyerere offers a highly authentic safari from a bygone era—allowing you to connect with nature without distraction.

African Wild Dog
Unique Boat Safaris: View the Wild from Still River Currents
While northern Tanzania forces you to remain inside an enclosed steel dashboard vehicle, Nyerere introduces a premier, legendary alternative: gliding peacefully down wide river waterways.
Drift silently in specially crafted canopy boats with silent outboard engines. Watch giant pods of hippos grunting and snapping their jaws just meters away, while massive Nile crocodiles slide off warm mud banks into the currents.
Sip chilled drinks as blood-red suns sink behind black palm silhouettes.
Capture water storks and colorful bee-eaters nesting straight along sandbanks.
Guided Walking Safaris: Reconnect with the African Soil
Nothing matches the sheer sensory thrill of stepping off your safari vehicle and pressing your boots into the warm, wild dust of Nyerere National Park.
Led by a highly accredited, armed national park conservation ranger and our certified naturalist-guide, walking safaris transform the bush from a visual theater into an interactive library. Smell dry herbs, track ancient elephant paths, decode bird nesting behaviors, and experience raw survival on foot.
Nyerere: Africa's Premier Stronghold for African Wild Dogs
The beautiful African Wild Dog (also referred to as the painted wolf) is among the planet's most endangered large carnivores, with fewer than 6,600 surviving in the wild.
Nyerere National Park stands as a critical global conservation sanctuary for these social predators. In the vast miombo woodlands, wild dog packs range freely, raising their young in deep subterranean burrows. Witnessing a social pack hunt is one of the most exciting experiences in the natural world.

Southern Circuit Travel Guide & Logistics
Planning a Southern Tanzania safari requires specialized logistical expertise. Read our core planner resources, compiled by our expert safari planners.
1. Dispatch & Flight Logistics
Since Nyerere National Park sits isolated in southern Tanzania, driving from Arusha is not practical. Most guests instead book a 45-minute private coastal flight straight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar airports. Direct bush airstrips (including Mtemere and Siwandu) serve the camps.
2. River Safari Packing Tips
Bring lightweight, breathable khaki clothing to shield from the hot tropical sun, high SPF sunscreen, wide sun hats, and specialized insect repellents. Polarized lenses are invaluable to filter waterway reflection glare.
3. Responsible Wild Dog Tracking
Wild dogs are highly susceptible to canine viruses. Kilimanjaro Africa Safaris maintains strict distance boundaries relative to active nesting dens, ensuring we protect reproduction safety while maintaining incredible tracking views.
4. Eco-Conservation Programs
A percentage of all package bookings directly supports anti-poaching patrols and environmental research centers inside the Rufiji Basin, preserving this magnificent ecosystem for future generations.
