Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Day 3 (Part 3 of 8)

Day four: www.youtube.com A mini documentary about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. We took the "alternative" Lemosho route to climb. You can clearly see what alternative means by looking at the animated map at the end of each video. It involves almost circling around the mountain. We started along the usual Lemosho route camping at the Forest camp and at the Shira plateau. Then we headed north deviating from the usual route and camped at the Moir huts. From there we proceeded around the back of the mountain to Pofu campsite and then to the 3rd caves camp where our trail joined the Rongai route. Then we headed to the School huts for a brief stop before the summit push. Except for the first and second camps and the summit we essentially had the mountain to ourselves. This adventure was the best experience of my life so far. I cannot thank our guide Freddie and assistant guides Prosper and John enough. Their experience and knowledge was invaluable in helping us reach the summit. I would also like to thank Henry Stedman from www.climbmountkilimanjaro.com for making all this possible.

This film is of a trek to the top of the 5895m high Kilimanjaro peak which we reached on 4th January 2001 The trip started from Moshi, Tanzania and was run by Explore Worldwide, we took the Machame route up and the shorter Mweka route back down. No huts on these routes so in tests each night I hope it shows the how the terrain and scenery changed as we ascended

Machame ‘Whiskey’ Route on Kilimanjaro Climb – Trek

One day longer on trek, climbing a natural, rather than manmade path, the Machame Route is a more demanding but much quieter and scenic route up the mountain. Overnights are spent camping in tents which are carried and pitched by the accompanying porters. Highlights of this route are the Shira Plateau, Barranco wall and the Karanga Valley reaching the summit via Stella Point. Because this route is more taxing it is recommended that trekkers should be physically fit and with the additional day on trek to assist with acclimatisation there is a good chance of reaching the summit.
