Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, March 2012 — African countries sent representatives to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign. Seventy-four men, women and youth made a three-day trek to the top of Africa's highest mountain -- Mt. Kilimanjaro, standing at 5895m or 19341-ft above sea level with an extraordinary humanitarian objective. The 74 climbers representing 36 African countries, 14 United Nations agencies, businesses, women's rights activists and civil society organisations are participating in a continent-wide campaign to end violence against women and girls. This initiative is part of Africa UNiTE, the Africa component of the United Nations Secretary-General's global campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women.

Day 6 of the groups climb of Kilimanjaro by the Mechame route - this is it, having reached Barafu camp 4550m asl earlier in the day, the group rest up and wait to start the bid for the summit at 11pm. Worryingly, at nightfall, high winds and wet snow sets in - a blizzard threatens the attempt. By 11pm however the snow has cleared, giving great views of the huge stars and the lights of Moshi below, but the winds are still strong so the final climb is made with fresh snow underfoot and in the bitter cold, the wind adding to the chill factor. A tough climb with an seemingly never ending final push to the Stella point at 5756m asl at dawn and then another trek in extreme cold to reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m around 7.30am. The best bit was the guides, singing and chanting and urging us all on to keep going and reach the summit.

Africa UNiTE Campaign will raise once again our voices to end violence against women from a unique platform: the so-called 'Roof of Africa', The Mount Kilimanjaro. Governments, civil society, private sector, celebrities, media, academic institutions... are invited to join the Africa UNiTE to speak up and speak out in order to prevent violence, provide services to survivors and promote justice hitting the roof of Africa through one voice, one climb for an Africa free of violence against women and girls.
