  4. WOW!!!!! been up the Kili some 10 years ago & nearly died a few vertical metres above Gillman’s Point.. the return down lava sands from the to to took me about 2 hours.. EVERY step meant my brain was shaking & in pains.. need to return to get up to Uhuru Peark.. we did the coca cola route THANK YOU for this fascinating doco about Machame!!!! million *********

  6. Is the Machame Route supposed to be better than other routes? Which can you recommend? What is the best time to summit Kilimanjaro, August?

  7. MAchame is a little harder, but more scenic (and rewarding), and less touristy. You stay in tents as opposed to cabin (things) on Marangu.
I did it in September and that was awesome! MAke sure you rug up as it’s fucking cold at night!!!!!

  8. @CUGKS did you prepare in anyway for the altitude? I plan to do it sometime next year but I want to acclamatize myself first..

  9. Na, I’d never been above 1000m after 24 years living in Australia, and went to about 2500m in Switzerland for a week about a month before the climb. The trick is to go very slow from the start. That was challenging for me as I’m 25 and fit, and like to go as a fast as I can… but resist at all cost!! The only guy who didn’t make it was going way too fast the first few days! Listen to the guides, and don’t be afraid to go even slower than you think necessary.

    Enjoy, it’s very rewarding!

  10. This has to be added to my “100 things to do before I die” list.
